GHOSTBUSTERS Sequel Hits Consoles Next Year

A GHOSTBUSTERS sequel is on the way but it won't be in the traditional medium, reports Variety.. All the principal stars and writers are coming together for another story, this time as a video game series. The trade reports that Sony Pictures and Vivendi are teaming up alongside Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, William Atherton, Brian Doyle Murray and Annie Potts. The game will hit markets in fall of 2008.

Aykroyd and Ramis will pen a story for the vidgame that takes place in the early '90s, after "Ghostbusters II," during a new ghoul invasion of New York City.

"We noticed we did well on 'Scarface' and were alert for new opportunities to turn iconic film products into games in a way that is a new manifestation of the franchise," Vivendi Games CEO Bruce Hack said. "'Ghostbusters' is unquestionably among the small number of movies in that class."

Publisher is particularly optimistic for the chances of "Ghostbusters" because, unlike the young male-targeted "Scarface," it has the potential to appeal to children and adults. Developer Terminal Reality is making a "Ghostbusters" game for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 aimed primarily at the core gamer demographic, while Red Fly Studios is making a version for Playstation 2, Wii and DS designed more for families and casual gamers.

I'd rather have a CGI ghostbusters movie rather than a videogame that isn't gonna sell much. I'm sure i'll rent it to check it out, that is if it comes out on the PS2 because the new gen consoles are too rich for my pockets at the moment. I still say CGI movie. Anyone agree?

I agree about a CGI movie being a better route to go than a game. That said, though, I'll take what I can get. I always thought the holdup on a Ghostbusters sequel was Bill Murray just because he'd become big enough (Lost in Translation, and other indy movies) where it wasn't in his interest to do again as opposed to Aykroyd who I love but hasn'tseemed to have had the success that the others have had. Ramis always seems to have his finger in some project, Hudson has had various acting roles (Oz is the last one I can remember), and Potts has had other acting roles as well since Ghostbusters (Designing Women is the last one I can think of).

I hope the game does well.

I would LOVE to bust ghosts with my Wiimote! That said, the story left me a little confused because of that last line. Is this story saying a THIRD Ghostbusters game is being developed, in addition to two already in production?? Or that Vivendi is shopping out two different kind of Ghostbuster games?

I agree a movie is always better, but what I like about the direction video games are going is that they are becoming a LOT more story driven, and it isn't just about having pretty graphics or game control. If the story sucks no one wants to buy it. It's one reason why Final Fantasy is one of my favorite franchises.

There's a lot they can do with this game, and they can make the characters look like they did or would in the 90s. You know for a FACT that if they did a new movie people would be bitching that they look fat and old. Well, yea, they are! People get hyped up on a sequel coming almost 20 years after the last one because of nostalgia and when it does play out EXACTLY how they imagine it should, they complain.

I think this could sell gobs of money if done right. If it's being done by the same company that did Scarface, that game did pretty well and was well received. I'm all for this!

Of all the proposals of ways to do a third Ghostbusters (travel to hell, training a new team, etc.), I think this definitely is the way to go. I say if the game sells well, why not turn it into a CGI movie? That, and I'm glad to see Ernie Hudson finally included in a cast listing!!

Oh God. Just let it die. I loved the original movie, but don't keep trying to milk it. Let it go. That being said, I'm really surprised Bill Murray is on board for this. No one else on the list surprises me, but lately, Murray seems like he would feel he is "above" something like this.

I haven't found a video game I could play in about 10 years. I think the last one I was really into was RE2, and I liked the FF for PS2. but after I played those games, I haven't played a game forever, I always get bored in about 1/2 hour of playing, lose interest, and decide I could be using my time better, like drawing.

That said, I'd probably play this just for the chance to see new Ghostbusters adventures. A movie would be preferable, but no CGI. I want old tired run down Ghostbusters.

BRING ON GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

My secret hope is this game will sell well, and a third movie may come out of it. I read rumors of Ben Stiller attached to a GB sequel. That would be SICK!

Ben Stiller Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn buy out the Ghostbusters Franchise, while the original team oversees the action. SWEET!

I must say, the idea of playing a ghostbusters game on a Wii sounds intriguing. Then maybe we could tear up the bar like Egon on our first ghost. "Woah, woah, woah, woah! Nice shootin' Tex!"

Brian Doyle-Murray? Was he in either Ghostbusters?

And what became of Rick Moranis? Can they get him back too???

Brian Doyle Murray played the Dr. that worked at Belvue, when the Ghostbusters were committed. This was in GB2.
