Burton Confirmed For ALICE & FRANKENWEENIE

Variety has confirmed the rumors of Tim Burton tackling two new projects in 3-D format next year. The trade reports that Burton will direct the re-imagining of ALICE IN WONDERLAND first with shooting scheduled to wrap by May. The film will be combined performance-capture imagery alongside live-action footage. Burton will be directing a screenplay of the Lewis Carroll classic adapted by Linda Woolverton.

After he finishes that project, he's moving onward to FRANKENWEENIE, an full length adaptation of his 1984 short film. This one will be shot in stop-motion and shown in digital 3-D. His short film was about a pet dog brought back to life from his loyal owner.

i think Burton is perfect for Alice in Wonderland, but i'd like to see a darker more twisted version of Alice in Wonderland made into a movie... kinda like the American McGee version of Alice

Yeah, what happened to the Alice that was going to be directed by Was Craven and starring Sarah Michele Gellar? I really wanted to see that one. I love Burton's movies and this is perfect for him. But the last live action/ stop motion movie didn't do so well. Monkeybone was a sick twisted fun movie, but didn't find its audience. I am sure Alice will.

Finally Burton is getting back on track. I hope that he'll go back and maybe throw â€œVincentâ€ on one of these just so people can see that on the big screen

Expect, in the near future, the attachment of Helena Bonham Carter and Jonny Depp in both films. This will, of course, be followed up with a press release by Tim Burton caliming "Really, I don't just hire them for every role. Just the ones I can see them in... which is every role."

All snark aside, I really do think Old School Tim Burton would have made a great Alice in Wonderland. But the Tim Burton of Now has just been losing his edge with everything he's done after Big Fish. Maybe I'm finally getting tired of his insistance to never push his artistic eye, instead falling back on the same tired game over and over.

WOW!!! I'm STOKED!!!!

ya know........last year, I went to a book signing where Gregory Maguire (the "Wicked" books) was doing a talk and book signing session (he lives somewhere in my neck of the woods) I talked to him about a "Wicked" movie, saying half-jokingly, in a fan- boyish sort of way, that Tim Burton should direct the film of it (which I think is a great fit). Maguire replied to me that Burton did, in fact, express interest. I know its further off on the horizon, but we'll see..........

Oh, great. Another Tim Burton 're-envisioning'. Mad Magazine got fairly lame as I got older, but I'll never forget the image they had of Tim Burton with a speech bubble above his head at the 'Planet Of The Apes' premiere: "My only problem with the original Planet Of The Apes was that I personally didn't profit from it. This version corrects that."

So what's next? A new 're-imagining' of 'The Wizard Of Oz'? Well, okay. Only if they use Todd McFarlane's figures as a reference point:

Last I read, American McGee's Alice is being released sometime next year. It's being directed by Marcus Nispel (of 2003's Texas Chainsaw movie), but still in the pre-production stage.

Doesn't seem that this stuff happens a lot. Someone decides to tackle a premise or subject and not far behind is someone else trying to move in on the idea. Either way I like the sound of it, especially Amer. McGee version. The Burton version will probably be a gothic look with the usual cast.
